Roche Diagnostics GmbH is the leading diagnostic company in the world. We develop products for life science research (Roche Applied Science), for clinical use (Roche Molecular and Roche Professional Diagnostics) and for patient self testing (Roche Diabetes Care). The main research activities are performed at two sites in Germany, Penzberg and Mannheim. The main focus of our research group is the development of novel applications for the xCELLigence System, such as the monitoring and quality control of stem cell differentiation. Future perspectives of our research include the development of defined workflows, including the xCELLigence Real-Time Cell Analyzer, LightCycler, Universal Probe Library, Sequencing (454 Life Sciences2), and Microarray Technology (NimbleGen2). The integration of these systems in a work process should give rise to a comprehensive and modular screening platform for specific approaches in cellular analysis, such as the monitoring of proliferation, cytotoxicity, apoptosis, and stem cell differentiation. Our contribution to the project will be Interface unit for supporting…(WP1.2), Training (WP1.4), Functional readouts via i) Electric acitivity (WP2.1), ii) Impedance measurement (WP2.2) and iii) (High throughput) Imaging (WP2.3) as well as “-omics” readouts via gene expression profiling (WP3.1).

Manfred Watzele, PhD. Director R&D for cellular analysis at Roche since 2007. Before he was, as a senior scientist, involved in the development of kits for cellular analysis and in vitro protein synthesis, protein detection and protein purification with Roche. Manfred has about 20 years of experience in the development of products for life science research. He will be supervising Elvira Bantle and Christine Bruns.
