The Deutsches Krebsforschungszentrum (German Cancer Research Center, DKFZ) enjoys a worldwide reputation for excellence in basic and translational cancer research and is one of the leading centers in that area. The tasks of the Department of Biostatistics are the research and the consulting for the application of biostatistical methods in cancer research. The approach is strongly interdisciplinary, combining biostatistical consulting, cooperation in research projects with experimental units, and methodological statistical research. The Biostatistics Unit has long-term experience in evaluating data from in vitro studies and bioassays. We have focused on the statistical analysis of gene and protein expression data which were generated in a large national research network. Also, we have coordinated the data collection for and analysed the data set obtained from a national interlaboratory study. We have given statistical support for ReProTect (FP6), providing expertise in study design, performing statistical evaluation for various in vitro tests for reproductive toxicity and selecting assays for the feasibility study in ReProTect. Recently, we have been contracted for statistical support for ACuteTox (FP6). In this context, we have reanalyised all raw data and selected the assays to be included in the prevalidation study of ACuteTox.

Prof. Dr. Annette Kopp-Schneider, biostatistician, coordinates a small team focusing on preclinical biostatistics, i.e. statistical methods for in vitro and experimental in vivo studies. Ongoing projects are funded by EU FP7 and ECVAM. She is (co)author of more than 70 peer reviewed papers.
